This website was founded by a survivor who continues to experience the devastating impacts of coercive control on herself and her child.
Her personal journey has illuminated the complex and often invisible ways this abuse harms individuals and families. This platform is born from a deep understanding of the intricate nature of coercive control – a “web of abuse” – and a fierce determination to provide clarity, resources and advocacy for others caught within its threads. The aim is to shed light on the insidious patterns of coercive control, offer support and push for systemic change to better protect children and victim-survivors in Aotearoa.
The many aspects of coercive control
It’s an insidious web woven from tactics like financial abuse, systematic isolation, and relentless psychological manipulation, all designed to erode a person’s freedom and sense of self.
Financial abuse
Gaining control over a victim’s money and economic resources, systematically depriving them of financial independence. This tactic traps individuals in abusive relationships by making escape seem impossible.
Isolation
Isolation is a critical thread designed to sever a victim’s lifelines. Abusers systematically cut off contact with friends, family, and support networks. This deliberate separation deepens the victim’s vulnerability and makes escape incredibly difficult.
Denying and blaming
Abusers relentlessly deny their harmful actions, often gaslighting victims into doubting their own perceptions and memories further cementing the abuser’s control. Denying and blaming are powerful tools used to manipulate reality.
